2021: What to Expect from SEO

by | Feb 10, 2021 | marketing

First an overview: what is SEO?

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. The goal of search engine optimization is to increase the quality and quantity of traffic being brought to your website. In order to increase sales people need to be able to find your website!

Traditionally, SEO uses keywords in the content of the website. By adding content optimized for searchable keywords you will improve where your website shows up on search engines. The better your keyword usage and copy, the higher your website can rank in search engines. The higher the rank of search engines, the more likely that users will find it and go to it.

What to Expect for 2021

Every year, Google makes changes on its algorithms and 2021 is no different. With trends moving towards mobile searches and user interfaces, Google is implementing new changes in 2021 to cater specifically toward these things. These changes will have an immediate effect on how websites are ranked and how we at Boiling Point Media will be implementing SEO.

The most important change will be happening in May of 2021. Google will be including the user experience of a website as part of its ranking factor. It is calling this measurement CWV, the Core Web Vitals. The CWV are broken down into loading speed, interactivity, and visual stability.

  • How quickly will the page load? A good score is less than 2.5 seconds
  • How quickly does the page interact when a button is pushed? A good score is less than 100ms
  • Visual Stability: do elements on a page jump around when the user is attempting to click on them? The score must be less than .1

Ever try to read an article and ads or images keep loading making you lose your spot in that article? How frustrating! While timing

things like page loading speed and interaction is understandable I had the question: How is the visual stability found? layout shift score = impact fraction * distance fraction

Impact fraction is how much the move of an element impacts the difference between two frames of a web page and distance fraction is how far that element traveled. These changes can range from wildly frustrating all the way to costly for a user.

The goal of this new algorithmic change is to think more about the users of a webpage. The higher the experience score of that page the better the experience. Google is actively looking for pages that are faster in load times, are interactive, stable, secure and mobile-friendly!

The second is mobile friendly indexing. Is the website mobile friendly? This is not an entirely new implement. Mobile friendly websites have been indexed for years as the smartphone has evolved.

The final change this year is will be in March 2021. Google will be making mobile-first indexing the default option. This means that Google will be pulling information for Google searches only from the mobile websites. As they implement these changes, Google has also provided a document to help people prepare for this change.

Here are a few of the tips:

  • Make sure Googlebot can see your content
  • Enable lazy-loading on mobile version
  • Be aware of what you block
  • Make sure primary content is the same on desktop and mobile
