Film Coloring & Color Grading

Movie Color

Have you ever noticed that movies seem to have a specific color permeated throughout? For example, The Wizard of Oz uses color to show the difference between reality and Dorothy’s dream. The movie starts out as black and white and then when we are taken to Oz, everything is suddenly bursting with vibrant colors, setting the mood for the rest of the movie. This necessary movie color correction is a form of film coloring called color grading and is performed by a Colorist.

Color Correcting vs Color Grading

At Boiling Point Media, our film colorist services encompass both color correction and grading. Color correction involves fixing video colors to their intended appearance, aligning shots for consistency, and adjusting filming errors like temperature or exposure. Typically the first step, it tackles oversaturation in raw footage to achieve a natural, human-eye perspective. The goal is to ensure the footage mirrors the way we naturally perceive colors.

Color grading is the process of adding movie color to a film to either enhance a background or to set a mood for the movie.A colorist will perform color grading on a film for the added affect of creating a mood like scary or happy in a movie.

Whereas, color grading is the process of grading, or editing, colors in the film creating the overall aesthetic of your video footage. It is usually done after the film colorist has completed the color correcting and is the more creative side of things where the purpose is to change the feel and overall look of the film. It’s important to note that this step is entirely optional, but is highly recommended in order to create a film that is trying to convey a specific feeling or mood. For example, if your film is horror, then we would use higher contrast and darker tones.
